Returning to nature by practicing outdoor yoga

10 February 2023
The benefits of outdoor physical activity, combined with the practice of yoga, help us rediscover our innate connection with nature. Self-awareness is the first step toward well-being and fully appreciating the world around us.

Yoga is a discipline that offers significant physical and mental benefits. It also stands out from many other physical activities by helping us discover a deeper connection with nature. As one of the most renowned masters, B.K.S. Iyengar, stated: “We are part of it, and we live within it.”

Over the past century, humans have distanced themselves from nature. Cultural and social shifts have driven people to work in increasingly technological cities, where the natural environment gradually disappears. Despite this, it has been impossible to sever our bond with nature completely. This connection is evident to anyone who takes a moment to contemplate the beauty around them—it brings joy and a sense of well-being.

Like many other disciplines, yoga is often practiced indoors, which diminishes many of its benefits. By engaging directly with nature, we can fully grasp the primal unity we share with it and the countless advantages it offers. Breath by breath, we rediscover an inner peace long absent, as we have become accustomed to the frenzy and stress of urban life. Studies show that mere contact with nature calms the nervous system, and when combined with yoga, it fosters a sense of rejuvenation and alignment with both ourselves and the universal energies.

Rebuilding our connection with nature helps us grow in self-awareness. Unfortunately, this is harder to achieve in cities, where stressful lives contribute to various health issues. This disconnection is harmful both to us and to the environment around us.

So how can we bridge this gap? The first step is always a deep understanding of ourselves, and practicing yoga outdoors is an excellent starting point. At Discover Brunate, we embrace this concept by guiding our clients into nature, offering breathtaking experiences on Monte Boletto and in the forests above Brunate. These sessions include meditation, breathing exercises, and yoga. Practicing in the open air provides something unique for everyone, whether experienced practitioners, beginners, hikers, or those simply curious about the benefits of yoga.
